Hour of code tasks - binary / image rep

These worksheets have been created for CS Education week, for the Hour of Code, but can be used for a computing activity throughout the year. Students as young as Year 4 (8-year olds) can be given this to work on (and maybe younger!) I like the CS Unplugged activities but have remixed the worksheets so they’re shorter and more ‘student-ready’. I have also added MS Excel versions for one of the image representation tasks. This is great to use particularly when differentiating. (The worksheets are available on another account which also belongs to me.)

Dinosaur name, trace & design activity, w/ dinosaurs on A4 + anagrams

(0)
This pack contains 14 pages of activities. The first is a 2-page activity, for which the kids need to name, trace and then design (colouring, painting, glittering etc) each of the 11 featured dinosaurs (grey silhouettes). There is a table of names on page 2 which the kids can use to help them name the dinos. A file with the dinosaur silhouettes and their names is included. The next 11 sheets are the individual dinosaurs enlarged on A4 files, with instructions suggesting that after naming and tracing the dinosaurs, they should get creative and colour and decorate, before writing 3 facts about the dinosaur. Surely these would make for a great wall display. The last activity is a wonderful anagrams activity. The kids need to read the (often strange) set of words and then rearrange the letters to figure out the name of the dinosaur. ‘carpet riots’ anyone? (Answer file included)

Fun movie quiz sheet for "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" 18 questions. Answer sheet included

(0)
This quiz can be used as a comprehension exercise where children watch the film “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” and then answer as many questions correctly as they can. The adjusted / differentiated activity can be that the film is watched in two halves (or smaller chunks) to give children less to remember all at once and more of a chance to get all 18 questions correct! This activity can also be an opportunity to practice spellings, learn something new (what exactly is a barnacle?) and most importantly, have fun! You can also encourage children to come up with their own questions to test others. This is a suitable task for Grade 4 upwards (approximately 8+ years) and FYI the film has a PG rating. Answer sheet is included. If not used for skills practice, just save it for a treat or a rainy day!
